Overcoming The Challenges In Building A Family Legacy

On May 18, 2010, Gary DeMar interviewed Kevin Swanson on American Vision.

The discussion was not just on the importance of creating a family legacy but also identified some of the attitudes we need to develop to help us start down that road.

Gary asked questions related to, “How can you create a financial legacy for your family?”

  1. “Give us a couple of encouraging things you see taking place [among Christian homeschoolers].”

Kevin reported that people are taking on this Biblical Worldview concept and seeing we’ve been bankrupted by the ideas of the humanists. He sees a lot of moms and dads out there saying, “We’re done with this! We want to hear what the Word of God has to say about these things!” So, Kevin talks about education being discipleship ultimately in the fear of God – the beginning of wisdom. Kevin sponsored a conference with almost 1000 people just talking about the Biblical principles related to economics, bringing back a family based economic picture.”

Gary then noted that they have encouraged, and some at American Vision have started their own businesses. Why? – Because it’s good to gain some economic independence and teach your children how to run a business – accounting – marketing. American Vision doesn’t want to promote only the philosophical aspects of Christianity, but also the practical application of that into every area of life.

  1. “Give us a little idea of what creating a financial legacy might look like and some of the things you’re going to talk about at our conference.

Kevin’s number one point was – FREEDOM! He noted that a lot of families want to be free – free from household debt – free from corporate slavery. So Kevin will talk about establishing a vision for your family economic future and hopefully that will involve some political freedom as well. Kevin believes the family needs to be the basic economic unit. So he will be talking about family economic teams and how to build your family economic future and how to establish an inheritance.”

  1. “How do you accomplish getting them over the fear factor of going out on their own and starting a business?

Kevin’s first step is to just encourage people to develop a vision for your family. Families need to develop a vision for freedom and that vision may ultimately grow into a multigenerational vision. Many families aren’t going to be debt free in the next five years. They won’t be able to have they’re own entrepreneurial endeavor in the next 10 to 15 years, but at least they develop the vision and develop that direction for their family and over time, they will get there. Another thing families can do is involve their children and spouse in family business. People ask Kevin, “Are you a one income family, or a two income family?” Kevin responds, “I’m a seven-income family!”

OK. I’m not sure what this is about. I see the curriculum teaching children how to start their own business and that’s great but you talk about families having their own businesses and dad’s coming home. Where is this resource?

    Thanks!
